I want to clear the air about something: There’s no such thing as getting ‘back into pre-baby shape’.
Why, you ask? Because your body will never be exactly the same as it was before, after having carried a child. YOU won’t be the same. For the rest of your life, your time, your patience, your energy, and your heart will belong, in large part, to someone else.
But, don’t despair! I’m NOT here to tell you that you’ll never look or feel great again. In fact, I’m here to tell you the EXACT opposite. I’m here to tell you the story of how life AFTER baby can be even BETTER than it was before, both physically and emotionally.
You see, I’ve been there. I’ve gained 55 lbs with each pregnancy over a three year time span. I’ve done the traditional tracking of points or calories, spending hours at the gym, and still not feeling good when I looked in the mirror thing. After TWO YEARS of hard work after my first pregnancy, I had lost the weight, but still wouldn’t be caught dead in a bikini or smiling in a dressing room. You know why? Because my focus was always on the scale. On that darn number that dictated whether or not I was a success. Whether or not I was ‘skinny enough’.
And after gaining ANOTHER 55 lbs with my second pregnancy, I knew I had do something about it. I didn’t have the energy that a 29 year old should have, let alone the energy to handle a then 3 year old son and a newborn at the same time. I wanted to be healthy. To be PROUD in my own skin, and to have the confidence that I knew I deserved and wanted to exemplify for my two children.
A gym just wasn’t going to happen. Too expensive and, honestly, who wants to bundle up two kids in the middle of Chicago winter every day? So I decided to start simple, with at home workouts, and take it one day at a time. I started out – I set a goal to lose 10 lbs in three weeks. And I failed to meet it. I lost 5 lbs. Rather than be set back, disappointed, and withdrawn, I focused on what I DID accomplish, and started setting goals that were more than just a number. And I kept on. I kept pushing. And by ten months post partum, I had not only lost the 55 lbs I had gained during pregnancy, but was in the best shape of my LIFE.
More importantly, I was starting to LOVE myself. I started to look in the mirror and, rather than immediately seeing flaws, I would immediately notice things I LIKED about myself. I gained confidence. And I saw myself becoming a better wife and mother, as a result. And that fueled me, and drove me to make this into a purpose. To help other mamas, just like myself, truly find their confidence and become the healthiest role models they can be for their littles.
And so here I am, nearly three years later, sharing my story with you, so that you realize YOU can be the best version of yourself after kids, too. To be HAPPY in your own skin. Because it IS possible, and you WILL get there ❤️
