I’m not the best at relaxation. I’m always on the go with one project or another, going here or there, and generally keeping busy. But, when I’m not, I’m pretty much a blob. I “rest” by watching TV or surfing the web (or, more specifically, social media), rather than actually taking a break for my mind as well as my body.
When I do relax – and I have to make an effort to actually relax, not just rest – there are a few things the I may do to help wind down.
1. Breathing. There’s a technique called Heart Math, which I learned about recently, which is great for lowering your heart rate and calming anxiety. The idea is to breathe in concentrating on your heart, and breathe out, exhaling a positive thought. It really works!
2. Read a book. I love reading, and delving into another world can really allow my brain to switch off for a while. Depending on the book, it sometimes can wind me up again, though!
3. Meditation. I feel silly trying to meditate, but I do listen to meditation tracks, and they are very helpful in regulating your breathing and cantering your focus. I particularly like Louise Hay’s Morning and Evening Meditations; her voice is very soothing. Anthony Strano’s A Time for Healing is also a good set of meditation tracks.
Relaxation is definitely something I could do more of. Whenever I have a free minute, I try to “get stuff done”, and end up tired when I could have spent a few minutes feeling refreshed and replenished.
What are your favourite ways to relax?
