I didn’t really have cravings during my pregnancy, but I did eat my fair share of ice-cream! I have a sweet tooth, and it got a whole lot sweeter …
It was difficult to resist the call of sugar during my pregnancy. I did my best to eat healthy and avoid taking pharmaceuticals and so on, which we thought would be best for the baby. For the most part, I succeeded. But every now and I’d get the urge to indulge in ice-cream or chocolate.
A few times, I felt like eating ice-cream at work, and turned up after my break with a box of Magnums (to share!) more than once. I’m sure my colleagues were very amused! Another time, I waddled back to the office in possession of a nice big waffle cone, stuffed with Strawberry Surprise.
I guess, reading over it now, it does sound like a bit of a craving; but it wasn’t the kind of craving where you feel like the world will end if you don’t eat it. I was quite lucky with food … I only had one aversion (red meat), and my “cravings” were very mild. I did experience dysgeusia (pregnancy symptom: metallic taste in your mouth; stay tuned for a post on this soon!), however, and ice-cream was one of the only things that masked the taste for a little while. That was really un-fun! Luckily, it went away a few weeks into my second trimester.
Ice-cream is still something I “crave” even now, eight months post partum! But, of course, it’s got more to do with weather and less to do with a little person wiggling around inside me and making my hormones go nuts!
